Who we are
VTEMSONO is led by Dr. Peter Weimersheimer, Founder and CEO, an emergency physician and ultrasound educator with more than 30 years of clinical and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) experience. VTEMSONO focuses on advancing POCUS education, system development, and the design of sustainable ultrasound programs that enable clinicians to integrate ultrasound effectively into everyday patient care.
Dr. Weimersheimer’s work centers on helping health systems and clinicians implement practical, high-impact POCUS programs across diverse care environments, including primary care, resource-limited settings, pre-hospital medicine, and rural health systems. His expertise includes hands-on and virtual ultrasound education, curriculum design, workflow integration, reimbursement strategy, and system-wide ultrasound program development.
A Professor Emeritus of Emergency Medicine at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, Dr. Weimersheimer founded and directed the University of Vermont Emergency Ultrasound Section and developed multiple pioneering educational programs, including the Emergency Medicine Residency POCUS curriculum, a transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) resuscitation program, a nurse/tech PIV program, a regional anesthesia program, and an integrated medical school ultrasound curriculum. He also helped establish system-wide ultrasound credentialing, education, and clinical practice standards across the University of Vermont Health Network (UVHN).
In addition to extensive clinical practice at the University of Vermont Medical Center and numerous critical access hospitals, Dr. Weimersheimer has held leadership roles including Division Chief of Emergency Medicine, UVHN POCUS Director, and Vice President of Clinical Implementation and Education at Butterfly Network, where he worked internationally on ultrasound education, program development, and clinical adoption.
He completed medical school at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, an Emergency Medicine residency at Boston City Hospital/Boston Medical Center, and advanced training through the Ultrasound Leadership Academy.
Dr. Weimersheimer has extensive experience teaching POCUS internationally through a combination of live lectures, hands-on scanning workshops, and virtual education platforms. His programs emphasize practical skill development and sustainable local training models. Educational activities include bedside scanning instruction, structured virtual classrooms, image review and quality assurance sessions, and individualized mentorship for clinicians developing ultrasound programs in their own institutions. This blended educational approach supports both foundational learning and long-term program growth for clinicians practicing in a wide range of health care environments.
Today, VTEMSONO continues to support clinicians and health systems through POCUS education, program implementation, and strategic system development.
